Loaded from skin to core with antioxidant disease abating super nutrients, berries are considered among the most important foods to be consuming.
Blue, black, boysen…ras, straw…Saskatoon (okay only the Canadians will get that reference) – but you get the picture.
Berries are the colorful garnish you actually enjoy consuming.
Berries are typically bought fresh, especially in season, but near the ice-cream and frozen whipped cream, you can buy the frozen bags, the type usually reserved for making smoothies.
The Efficient Eater who does not want to buy bulk fresh berries that will spoil before they are eaten, can buy frozen. You unfreeze a portion at a time, and eat them each day as the ‘desert’ part of another meal.
To make this work, you only need a fridge-type small container that holds about 4 days worth of berries in your preferred serving size. This is similar to creating your own steamer bags for frozen vegetables. But in this case, the berries are already frozen and you remove them from the bag in select portions at a time.
The nutritional value is the same as eating fresh (although some debate this given the processes used to package and distribute fruit for transport). If you set up your frozen berries for consumption as room temperature berries, you can still enjoy your daily serving of the vitamins and not feel like you have missed out on food you should be eating.
